A los 150 años desde "El origen de las especies": ¿es darwinista la biología contemporánea? RChHN
FOLGUERA,GUILLERMO; BOZINOVIC,FRANCISCO.

A Lux-like Quorum Sensing System in the Extreme Acidophile Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans Biol. Res.
RIVAS,MARIELLA; SEEGER,MICHAEL; HOLMES,DAVID S; JEDLICKI,EUGENIA.
The genome of the acidophilic, proteobacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, contains linked but divergently oriented genes, termed afeI and afeR, whose predicted protein products are significantly similar to the LuxI and LuxR families of proteins. A possible promoter and Lux box are predicted upstream of afeI. A cloned copy of afeI, expressed in E. coli, encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the production of a diffusible compound identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry as an unsubstituted N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) of chain length C14. This AHL can be detected by a reporter strain of Sinorhizobium meliloti Rm41 suggesting that it is biologically active. The reporter strain also responds to extracts of the supernatant of A. ferrooxidans...

A Macroanatomical and Histological Study of the Uropygial Gland in the White Stork (Ciconia cicionia) International Journal of Morphology
Kozlu,Tolunay; Bozkurt,Yesim Akaydin; Ates,Sevinc.
The present study was aimed at the macroanatomical and histological investigation and the demonstration of the structural characteristics of the uropygial gland in the white stork. The uropygial gland of two adult male white storks constituted the material of the study. It was determined that the gland was situated subcutaneously in between the caudal aspect of the lumbosacral bone and the first coccygeal vertebrae. The gland was composed of two lobes, which displayed an oval appearance when viewed from above and resembled a water drop when observed medially. Tuft of feathers were present on the caudal margin of each lobe. The present study revealed that the uropygial gland of the white stork is a simple tubular gland, which discharges its secretion into...

A mathematic model for the interaction between Meloidogyne spp. and Pasteuria penetrans Rev. Protección Veg.
Miranda,Ileana; Gómez,Lucila; Benítez,Hugo L.; Castillo,Yoannia; Hernández-Ochandía,Dainé; Rodríguez,Mayra G..
Some aspects of Meloidogyne spp. (root-knot nematode) growth regulation by the gram-negative bacterium Pasteuria penetrans were reviewed. The study allowed the construction of a mathematical model to predict the dynamics of both organisms. The model includes 11 differential equations and 31biological constants describing the life-cycle of the nematode and its relationship with the bacterium. To simulate the real behavior of the populations, the constants, which represent biological parameters, have to be evaluated under controlled conditions similar to those of soil microcosm.

A microbial community analysis of the octocoral Eunicea fusca Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Duque-Alarcón,Angela; Santiago-Vázquez,Lory Z; Kerr,Russell G.
While there is a significant and growing body of knowledge describing the microbial communities of marine invertebrates such as sponges, there are very few such studies focused on octocorals. The octocoral Eunicea fusca is common on reefs in various regions of the Caribbean and has been the subject of natural product investigations. As part of an effort to describe the microbial community associated with octocorals, a culture-independent analysis of the bacterial community of E. fusca was conducted. Specifically, a 16S rDNA clone library analysis was performed to provide baseline data. A total of 40 bacteria members from 11 groups were found. In general, Proteobacteria were the dominant group with a total of 24 species and α-Proteobacteria...

A micromethod for high throughput RNA extraction in forest trees Biol. Res.
LE PROVOST,GREGOIRE; HERRERA,RAÚL; PAIVA,JORGE AP; CHAUMEIL,PHILIPPE; SALIN,FRANCK; PLOMION,CHRISTOPHE.
A large quantity of high quality RNA is often required in the analysis of gene expression. However, RNA extraction from samples taken from woody plants is generally complex, and represents the main limitation to study gene expression, particularly in refractory species like conifers. Standard RNA extraction protocols are available but they are highly time consuming, and not adapted to large scale extraction. Here we present a high-throughput RNA extraction protocol. This protocol was adapted to a micro-scale by modifying the classical cetyltrimethylammonium (CTAB) protocol developed for pine: (i) quantity of material used (100-200 mg of sample), (ii) disruption of samples in microtube using a mechanical tissue disrupter, and (iii) the use of SSTE buffer....

A Model for the Estimation of Personal Stature from the Length of Forearm International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,Isurani; Nanayakkara,Ganananda; Palahepitiya,Nadeeka.
Prediction of stature from incomplete and decomposing skeletal remains is vital in establishing the identity of an unknown individual. It has been stated that a variety of factors such as race, gender and nutrition play an important role in determining the height of an individual. Estimation of stature from measurements of various long bones has been achieved with varying degree of accuracy. Those studies resulted in establishing different formulae for the estimation of stature for the respective populations. However, evidence shows that there is a great void in such norms for Sri Lankans. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the relationship and to propose a gender and age specific linear regression models between the ulna length and height of an...

A molecular marker approach using intron flanking EST-PCR to map candidate genes in peach (Prunus persica) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Diez-de-Medina,Sergio; Silva,Herman.
In Peach (Prunus persica) several physiological changes, such as woolliness, triggered by chilling injury are involved in major production losses due to cold storage of the fruits during shipping. Additionally, the low level of polymorphisms among peach varieties is an important limitation in the search for new molecular markers that could be associated with economically important traits. Therefore, a functional approach was employed to associate candidate genes with an informative marker in peach. The data was obtained from the results of an in silico analysis of four different cold peach treatments. Thirty two candidate genes were selected that were aligned against Arabidopsis thaliana genomic sequences to design intron-flanking EST-PCR markers. These...

A Morphological Study of the Dorsum Sellae in Human Skull International Journal of Morphology
Haider,Syed Javed; Rezigalla,Assad Ali; Abdalla,Asim Mohammed.
Anatomical variations in the shape and dimension of the dorsum sellae and posterior clinoid process are common. Most textbooks describe its shape as a median rectangular plate, a square plate, or a transverse ledge on a slope behind the sella turcica (hypophyseal fossa). This work aims to study the dorsum sellae of human skull. One hundred and twenty five dried adult human skulls, irrespective of age, were used for the study. Detailed features of the dorsum sellae were noted and classified into five types: crest like, thin plate, frail quadrilateral plate, heavy square plate, thick elongated plate. Fusion of the posterior and middle clinoid processes in one (unilateral) and all the clinoid processes (anterior, middle, and posterior) in three skulls...

Villarreal-Silva,Eliud Enrique; Hinojosa Amaya,José Miguel; Bazaldua Cruz,Juan José; Martínez Fernández,David; Elizondo-Omaña,Rodrigo Enrique; Guzmán López,Santos.
Extraocular muscles are important references in strabismus surgery and in placement of intraorbital devices. We analyzed extraocular muscles morphometry and possible anatomical variances of 20 orbits. We report the length, width, and points of insertion of the extraocular muscles. No anatomical variations in length, width and points of insertion were found. With regard to the rectus muscles, it was found that the superior rectus and lateral rectus are the longest muscles and that the width difference between the superior and inferior rectus is greater than that between the medial and lateral rectus and that the point of insertion of the rectus muscles has a variable morphology. The superior oblique muscle was smaller in caliber than the inferior oblique,...

A most effective method for selecting a broad range of short and medium-chain-length polyhidroxyalcanoate producing microorganisms Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Revelo Romo,Dolly Margot; Grosso,María Victoria; Moreno Solano,Nubia Carmenza; Montoya Castaño,Dolly.
A molecular approach was used for selecting polyhydroxyalcanoate (PHA)-accumulating potential Gram-negative bacteria from different genera by colony polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three degenerate primers were designed for amplifying a fragment from PHA synthase gene (phaC) (Class I), phaC1 and phaC2 (Class II) genes for detecting PHA-producing bacteria. Thirty-four out of 55 bacterial strains from the old collection selected using Sudan black B staining were phaC+. PCR was used for directly selecting 35 new collection bacterial strains; these strains were phaC+ and their ability to produce PHA was confirmed by Sudan black B staining. Four specific primers were designed on genes of Class II PHA biosynthesis operon. These primers were used for evaluating...

A MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF Boophilus microplus (ACARI: IXODIDAE): NON-PARASITIC PHASE Rev Salud Anim.
de la Vega,R; Díaz,G; da Fonseca,A.H.
Multivariate statistical methods are relatively new tools for data analysis. They have a lot of applications in biological researches: nevertheless, for several reasons, they have not been widely employed in this subject yet. Recently, present authors published a paper applying multivariate statistics on non-parasitic phase of Anocentor nitens. In the present article Boophilus microplus has received a very similar statistic treatment. In this paper, the influence of different incubation conditions was studied in groups of 12-15 individuals in each of the 24 combinations of six temperatures 24, 27, 30, 32, 34 and 36ºC and four relative humidity values, 100, 80, 75.5 and 70% over the cycle variables of B. microplus. A multivariate analysis of taxonomic limits in Diplolaemus Bell 1843 Gayana
Victoriano,Pedro F; Coronado,Tanía M; Ortiz,Juan Carlos.
The gemís Diplolaemus Bell, 1843 is a common squamate component of the Patagonian región of South América. Considerable taxonomic confusión exists within this gemís, particularly about the status of Chilean-Andean populations and the actual distribution of D. leopardinas (Werner, 1898). In an attempt to clarify the taxonomic status and distribution of Diplolaemus species, we performed a principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant function analysis (DFA) using both standard morphometric and meristic data. Multivariate summaries of morphometric data show that most species are poorly discriminated, with the exception of D. darwinii. In contrast, a PCA analyses performed on the meristic data clearly distinguish three discrete groups: 1. D. darwinii, 2....

de la Vega,R; Díaz,G.
Multivariate statistical methods are useful tools complementary to classic univariate methods. In biology, they are used in several scenarios where data structure, classification and grouping are necessary. Nevertheless, it seems they have not been employed in the study of non-parasitic phase of ticks or any other arthropod. In this paper, the influence of different incubation conditions was studied in groups of 12-15 individuals in each of the 24 combinations of six temperatures 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, and 34ºC and four relative humidities 100, 80, 75.5 and 70% over the cycle variables of Anocentor nitens looking for establishing the most suitable environmental conditions to increase or decrease ticks performance and to apply these knowledges to zoogeography....
